Spelling Bee Winner Gives CNN Anchor Hard Time
Via Best Week Ever, CNN's Kyra Phillips Kiran Chetry learns that interviewing kids is the toughest job in news the hard way. It doesn't help that her interviewee, Evan O'Dorney, the winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee held here in D.C. last week, seems to be a particularly tough nut to crack. If watching a truly uncomfortable situation makes you cringe more than smile, you might want to skip this one.

"a man of few words, but when he utters them, he SPELLS THEM CORRECTLY."
uh....
also. that kid is pretty scary.
That video is painful to watch; she deserves a raise.
Also - homeschooling apparently is a success!
It's great to see home schooling turn out a child who is not socially retarded to fight the stereotype. He's a gem. Sure to break a million hearts in Utah.
Homeschooling might be a success, but it apparently gives no help in the personality department at all!
That kid makes me think of what a serial killer might have been like when they were young.
If he wasn't asked such stupid questions, he'd have something to say. Seriously. Makes me realize how terrible news shows are and how heavily scipted they are. They bring out a tuna sandwich prop for crying out loud in hopes of getting him to talk at length about how he always eats tuna sandwiches before bees. What was he supposed to say? I love how frustrated the anchor (and her off-camera producers) get when he gives simple answers to stupid questions. See this monkey spell well! Well done monkey! On to the next story.
That was the funniest thing I've seen all week. There's something to be said for the anti-social skills of a kid who can make any/everyone feel awkward. It's a creepy gift, but a gift nonetheless.
I love this kid. I watched the bee and rooted for him the entire time. He's straight gangsta. They did a feature on him during the spelling bee and he's like 'last year I competed in the Bee and I couldn't concentrate because all I heard was music'. Apparently he's a composer and kept thinking about melodies he wanted to write. Then at the end of the Bee, Stuart Scott interviews him and he's like "yeah, spelling isn't my favorite thing. I enjoy music and math much more". I mean, homeboy went hard during the post game and made Stuart Scott's fake eye roll. He's super badass. Much better than that weird girl who smelled her hands after every letter. Ok, I watch too many spelling bees.
Like Tarzan really, except his upbringing outside of human contact didn't give him mad talking with the animals skills, just mad spelling skills.
Human contact good. Fire bad.
Best. Video. Eva. Awesome how much she struggles like CNN struggles for ratings.
Bones...best comment evah
I thought that was Kyra too!!! Wow, what a terrible interview!
Not to make light, but did anyone else get the impression that this kid had a mild form of Asperger's Syndrome? I swear, between the post-bee interview and now this, I'm seriously curious as to why this kid is so damn awkward.
I've met lots of gawky homeschoolers, but this kid takes the cake.
There is a pretty good chance he won't see a vagina until he's 40. And that will be a hooker just before he begins his Unabomber rampage.
Was it just me, or did he seem impatient with the whole thing? I expected him to rip out the earpiece and just leave.
I'm sure it ranked up there as one of her favorite days at work. Nothing like having a kid critique your enunciation skills on national television.
Ten bucks says he got pantsed when he got back to school.
Pantsed? at home-school? by whom? -His mom?
Asperger's Syndrome?
Yup. Missed social cues, left-field communication skills, neurotic preoccupation with correctness, a mildly paranoid and confrontational tone, when challenged ... "Lack of participation in chitchat: they are not generally interested in, and do not participate in idle chat and gossip." (Wikipedia)
He gets excited when he is presented with a word to spell. It's like the only part of the interview where he's actually engaged.
I liked his interview from The Early Show (cbs)... uh, I can't (personally) post a url right now, but it's on the cbsnews website if anyone's interested.
Yeah, I'm not an expert, but I've known a few people with Asperger's and he appears to me to absolutely be one.
So glad I'm not living around him. He seems like he'll be going on a rampage in a few years.
Stupid Questions? Yeah - banal, but what the hell was she supposed to ask him, his opinions on the Iraq war? Clearly he wasn't able to answer coherently even the simplest inquiry.
Sorry based on his behavior, he is naturally socially retarded. Maybe he was homeschooled because his parents realized this and not the other way around.
