George Mason Students Given Leniency on Attendance

Thanks to a tip from a DCist reader, we found out today that George Mason University students -- no doubt relishing the taste of yesterday's victory over UConn -- are being given a little leniency in terms of class attendance. In an email to the university faculty, Provost Peter Stearns today wrote:
As you know, lots of our undergraduates had an exciting time yesterday in response to the basketball victory. Without in any way wishing to distort our priorities, I write to urge a bit of leniency in response to any absences from undergraduate classes today. Thanks for your understanding. We were out celebrating too. Do we get leniency on coming to work late?

Apparently, Mason kids are also getting leniency on maturity, too:P
Jokers... I can't count the number of times I sauntered in to class hung over. These guys are college students after all, right?
I don't know what's more definitive of college: going to class hungover when the professor has a strict attendance policy, or just not going at all regardless of said policy.
Seriously. Once after returning to Charlottesville from an all night party at a club in Baltimore, I took an exam while tripping! One celebration night and these kids are out of commission? They'll never last in the work world.
DC'74,
You've always been one of the more interesting DCists posting on here...yet you still managed to impress me today:P Actually, while my previous statement is neither totally serious nor totally in jest...you do seem cool, and I wouldn't have guessed you'd have made such a scenic detour--so to speak--back in college. It's good to share the city with fun, smart, and open-minded people like yourself.
As for me...I'm just an attention whore, trying to distract myself while at work. And I know there are readers who've been waiting to nail me on that. Sorry to beat you all to the punch:P
Commuter schools don't generally have the same levels of debauchery, since a lot of students live with their parents. Showing up high for class after eating scrambles off of someone's ass is actually fairly uncommon at places like GMU.
A true college basketball school would have at least set some couches on fire. GMU still has so much to learn from UMD, eh? ;)
They set couches on fire on Friday night. I'm guessing there was more UPD out on Sunday.
Basketball put George Mason on the map because it certainly wasn't on there for academics.
...that hurts. The shame of always being beaten down by those high flying erudite scholars with their Tenleytown Tech lawyer/barrista certificates. Guess the heavy representation of GMU faculty on NPR programming over their much closer in-town colleagues is due to the basketball team.
It was a good idea to allow students to skip class...
following the biggest upset in college basketball history.
To require the student's atttendance, when the teacher's themselves, were affected by the historic events...
would have amounted to an accademic farce.
Now, let's go out and root for GMU!
Alright, I'm going to go against everything I've stood for in the past 4 years and stand up for Mason. Because we're in the spotlight now, we can see certain individuals' true feelings about Mason. Let me tell you how it is. First, Mason's academic programs rival many 'prestigious' schools, state and nationwide. Second, our victories have brought this school and its community of students closer together than we have ever been. I spent years hating the campus life, and these wins have have sparked a camaraderie among us that never before existed. So give us a break, dammit. Yeah, I thought it was BS that we were given a break on attendance...I still had to go to work. But I think the Provost, et al. appriciate that we have taken this opportunity to come together as a student body. This university has needed for years.
don't blame the students for an email the provost sent. nobody got a petition together after the game on sunday or anything, i think we had other priorities. by the way, most be people went to class, as WE DIDN'T GET THE EMAIL. the profs did. go patriots.
back up school
I can tell.
I can tell.
