One More Sibling for the District

South Korea Shirt.JPGDamn it. The Post beat us to the punch on a witty title for this story.

In an article entitled "District Adopts a Seoul Sister," the Post today reports that the District's family of city siblings has grown by one -- Seoul, South Korea was designated a sister city yesterday, bringing the tally so far to 10.

During a ceremony at the John Wilson Building yesterday, D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams and Seoul Mayor Lee Myung-Bak drank sparkling cider and feasted on a three-tiered cake decorated with the flags of South Korea and the United States as they celebrated their newfound union. Seoul will now be added to a growing family of sister cities for the District, which include Paris, Athens, Brussels, Brazzaville, Bangkok, Beijing and Dakar. And while that may seem excessive, the Post notes that Chicago has 25 sister cities thus far, so we have some catching up to do.

We were particularly amused by this tidbit from the article, which brings into sharp relief the efficacy of Williams' security team:

Suddenly, amid the applause, a white-haired man approached, laid hands on the mayoral foreheads and began to pray. The man, Ray Bringham, the California founder of an international prayer summit, was not on the guest list. Startled city officials quickly led him away.
Thankfully, Seoul took this little protocol mishap in stride. Brussels, though, would totally have been a bitch about it.

Does this mean bunshiks inside the city limits?

You sure it wasn't Herbert Haft's ghost rattling his chains for "Dart Drug Field?

This sounds like friendster for cities.

Does anybody know the sister cities for Detroit? Beirut, Khartoum, Mogadishu, Medellin, Sarajevo...

What exactly does it mean to be a sister city? Do we get to travel to Seoul for free now? Do Seoul citizens get free Cake Love cupcakes sent to their doors? What is it all about?

Does anybody know the sister cities for Detroit?

Toyota City (Japan), Turin, Chongqing, Minsk, Nassau, Dubai and Kitwe (Zambia). Why?

Better than Harare, I guess...but about as meaningful as Takoma Park being a "nuclear-free zone" (I guess the drum circles are safer without marauding Polaris submarines)

cminus - it was a joke.
