Weekly Music Agenda
MONDAY>> We're excited to see Glasgow indie-pop group Camera Obscura headlining the 930 Club tonight. We last saw them at the Black Cat and compared them to Belle and Sebastian. The group's latest album, Let's Get Out of This Country, is whimsical, romantic and will make you feel a little bit better about your life, or at least, this dreary weather. Vermont via Brooklyn band Essex Green opens. 9:30 p.m., $15.
>> If your Fugazi T-shirt is still in heavy laundry rotation, we'll see you tonight at the Black Cat as Joe Lally headlines. With Capillary Action. $8, 9 p.m., back stage.
TUESDAY
>> Distortion, noise and earplugs -- the three things you need for a great night. Don't bother bringing a date, Pinebender is too loud to carry on any type of conversation. Des Ark opens. 9 p.m., $8.
>> There's no live music involved, but head on over to The Red & The Black for "Fat Tuesday's Phat Haircut and a Shot!" night. $12 will buy you a new look and the liquid courage it takes to get your hair cut in a cajun-themed rock club.
WEDNESDAY
>> You can't argue with a free night at club Five. With $5 drinks (including top shelf), we smell some serious hip-shaking a-cookin'. This week they bring you DJs Anton Chasm, Wickity, BFD, Section 8, Proxxy, DJ Illicit, Unknown and Logic. Time to bring out those silver spandex dancing pants you've been saving for just such an occasion. 9 p.m.- 3 a.m.
THURSDAY
>> If you haven't had your fix of post-rock yet this year, check out bass and synth heavy Bellflur at the Black Cat. Their atmospheric and melodic sounds are more experimental than the like of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but no less intense. The Sad Little Stars and The Hidden Ratio open. Backstage, doors at 9p.m., $8.
>>Holy big show alert! We have the illustrious Red Hot Chili Peppers, bringing their brand of cool, and the soulful and funky Gnarls Barkley, bringing their own, to the Verizon Center tonight. We imagine that a night of two sure-fire hit-makers will probably be pretty spectacular, if not at least, pyrotechnically. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are going for $69.50.
>> Baltimore's Payola Reserve and D.C.'s The Roosevelt (***) play the Rock and Roll Hotel tonight. 8 p.m., $10.
>> Thursday through Sunday the Velvet Lounge will play host to Emergenza. Partake in the world's largest organization of unsigned bands and let us know how it all goes down.
FRIDAY
>> D.C. favorites the Washington Social Club take on the Black Cat with a duo of excellent local bands -- These United States and Let's French. DCist has interviewed two of these bands before, so check out what they have to say before checking out this great night of local rock. It's a good way to get excited for an upcoming chance to see TUS that we're just a wee bit excited about. Mainstage, 9:30 p.m., $10.
>> This week's wait in line and hope it happens opportunity comes courtesy of Kristin Hersh. The founding member of Throwing Muses, 50 Foot Wave will be playing at Crooked Beat Records. Come early -- they can only fit 30-35 people in the store. 6 p.m., Free.
>> Teenyboppers and indie lovers alike will be flocking to the 9:30 club to check out Brandon Boyd's notorious abs. Incubus plays both tonight and tomorrow, with The Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr. opening. The tickets are sold-out, but you may have some luck on craigslist. 9:30 p.m.
SATURDAY
>> Part sex, part jazz and with a touch of electronic music, Jette-Ives are throwing a CD release party for In the Deep, at the Rock and Roll Hotel tonight. Jette Kelly will be joined in concert with DJ Delphi, jazz bassist Matt Lewis, and percussionist Rex Riddem of Thunderball Sound System. DAM! Fest alum Soft Complex and buzzlife DJ Buster open. 9 p.m., $10.
>> DC9 plays host to Nouvea Riche -- a dance party! Complete with the staple of any decent indie dance party: free Sparks and entry from 9-10 p.m. $8 after 10.
>> Tell Bilal in person what you thought of his souled out cover of Radiohead's "High and Dry" when he takes the stage at the Black Cat with W. Ellington Felton this Saturday. Saturday, January 27, 2006, 9:00 p.m., $22.00
As always- feel free to leave suggestions of other musical happenings in the comments.

Mark Eitzel Thursday at Iota is a can't-miss.
The Mirror Script and The Chance are playing at Black Cat backstage on Wednesday night. Only the two best indie rock bands in DC. Check 'em out!!
Incubus is playing Friday and Sat (26th & 27th). Not Thurs and Friday.
i thought crooked beat was closing? is it not?
"Silver spandex dancing pants"? At a night with some of DC's best d&b DJs? It's pretty obvious that DCist doesn't like dance music or clubs, but could you at least get your stereotypes straight? "silver spandex dancing pants" would be for disco, not drum & bass. Thanks.
i work at crooked beat & i can tell you there are no plans to close (nor were there ever).
also, our myspace is www.myspace.com/crookedbeat
thanks
Dear "Me" - thank you for catching that- Incubus is playing Friday and Saturday. We have made the change.
Dear DJ Hater- I was more commenting on the free entry and cheap drinks (thus allowing you to let loose your inhibitions). Next time I'll be sure to write "your silver UFOs" and no doubt garner fire from those who think those pants are so late-90s. We are as excited as you are, I'm sure, for this night of great DNB.
maybe i was thinking of revolution records
Please not to be discouraging people from showing up in silver spandex pants. I think the entirety of Five would love whomever had the spine to do this and I will seriously consider buying said person a drink.
If you're under 21, and if Jim Graham has his way, you won't be able to attend any of the shows listed above. He is holding a hearing/roundtable this Thursday to try to implement emergency legislation banning minors from clubs that serve alcohol. Send him e-mail, attend the hearing, make your voice heard if you care about live music in D.C.
Army of Me at 930 club tonight sold out!
Looking ahead a bit---Mess Up The Mess will play a CD release show on Saturday, February 3 at The Warehouse Next Door with Dawn of Man (MD) and The Shondes (Brooklyn). Doors are at 9:30 and it's 7 bucks to get in. The Warehouse is located at 1021 7th Street NW. Their debut CD is being released by local label Paroxysm.
