DCist's highly subjective and hardly comprehensive guide to the most interesting movies playing around town in the coming week.

Grave of the Fireflies

The most affecting film to deal with the human devastation of World War II isn't a sweeping, big budget epic. It's this intimate piece of Japanese animation about a brother and sister orphaned after an Allied firebombing of their hometown takes their mother, and the military their father. Seita, the older of the two, is forced to care for his young sister, Setsuko, after they are first foisted on an opportunistic aunt who can only be bothered to put a roof over their heads because it'll mean more food for her. When things sour with her, the kids are out on their own and take refuge in an abandoned bomb shelter as they try desperately to find food to survive.

Produced by Studio Ghibli, the animation house best known for films like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, the film stands in stark contrast to those Miyazaki fantasies, a sobering look at the effect of the war on the Japanese people. Director Isao Takahata, working from a semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, balances the grim realities with the whimsy of the children, Setsuko particularly, who is often able to find light in the darkest places. All of which will be small consolation when you're crying your eyes out by the end. And before anyone accuses me of ruining anything here, that's not really a spoiler. This is World War II we're talking about here, not Disney. Happy endings were in short supply, and the story actually winds its way gracefully and beautifully to a conclusion more comforting than all that death and destruction should allow.

View the trailer.
Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Freer Gallery's Meyer Auditorium. Free.

---

Washington Jewish Film Festival

The Washington Jewish Film Festival opens tonight for its 19th run of the best in Jewish filmmaking from around the world. Tonight's opener, Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger, is an Australian production about a young girl looking to use her bat mitzvah not only as her entrance into adulthood, but a chance to completely reinvent herself and her world. Toni Collette stars. From there, the festival runs through a program of nearly 60 features from all over the globe, covering a diverse range of stories that share this one common thread.

Opens tonight and runs through December 14 at seven venues around town. See the schedule for full details.
The Mourning Forest

While a lot of the international attention on Japanese filmmaking these days seems to be on its lucrative animation and horror exports, don't let that make you think that personal storytelling without chills, action, and creepy atmospherics are all Japan's filmmakers are interested in. Mourning Forest was last year's Grand Prix award winner at Cannes, a quiet and visually lush feature from director Naomi Kawase about a young retirement home worker who takes one of her elderly charges for a walk and then becomes hopelessly lost in the woods, becoming a mostly plotless character study of these two individuals as they wander, trying to find their way home. The setup reminds us of Gus Van Sant's Gerry, a film which can be tough going for some audiences with its long periods of quiet and inaction. Kawase's feature is described in similar terms by many critics, though consensus is that if you can move beyond the need for a film to be constantly steamrolling forward, Mourning Forest contains many rewards.

War Child

Of all the horrific stories that have emerged in recent years from the civil war in Sudan (and there are plenty to choose from), the kidnapping and indoctrination of young children into killers is perhaps at the top of the list of most heinous offenses to come to light. The subject of War Child, Emmanuel Jal, was one such child soldier, carrying and using an AK-47 in the war from the time he was seven until his ultimate escape from the military five years later. In the years since, he has become an international hip-hop star, playing music that calls for peace with an urgency that comes from his own harrowing experience. Local filmmaker C. Karim Chrobog has made a huge impression with his feature debut about Jal, racking up a truckful of awards with a film that tells a success story as unlikely as it is uplifting. The film premieres tomorrow at E Street, and Washington Film Institute is sponsoring a pre-movie happy hour at Bistro D'Oc with the film's producers in attendance.

---

Punch-Drunk Love

Punch-Drunk Love is easily Paul Thomas Anderson's most divisive film, and it's easy to see why. Coming on the heels of his epically-minded Boogie Nights and Magnolia, this quirky, and sometimes entirely dissonant and off-putting love story felt slight, nothing more than a throwaway to clear Anderson's head after the dense films that preceded it. The presence of Adam Sandler in the lead probably didn't help. Don't be fooled, though. Sandler delivers a performance of altogether shocking sensitivity, and underneath the quirkiness and odd plot directions lies a story about modern love and loneliness no less satisfying than the broader and more varied themes of his previous films. At the very least it's worth it to see a joyously over the top performance by Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the head of a small-time crime venture who goes after the hapless Sandler after the latter has ticked off one of the former's phone sex operators, and the dispute escalates to surreal levels. Not to mention seeing the song "He Needs Me", from Robert Altman's ill-advised Popeye movie, recontextualized into a dreamy montage; the 10-year-old in me who still harbors an unjustified love for that movie couldn't help but smile.

And if none of that convinces you, there's still a safe bet at the AFI this week, as the theater is screening a newly restored print of The Godfather.

One screening daily, Sunday through Wednesday, at the AFI. And if you're looking for The Godfather, that opens tomorrow and runs for one week.

This has been everywhere already, but we're still giggling over the story of how Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) hung up on President-Elect Barack Obama because she thought he was a prank caller. And then issued a press release about it, in which her office misspelled both Obama's first name and the last name of Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. Given how many media and communications professionals are being laid off around town these days, seems like any remotely competent Washington PR person looking for work ought to strike while the iron is hot here.

As we noted last week, most galleries are headed to Miami for the weekend of <strike>debauchery</strike> art parties known as Art Basel. Though some galleries have shows ongoing, it would be wise to call and make sure they're open this weekend if you plan to visit. In the meantime, we have plenty to keep us busy, especially as many venues turn into markets for the holiday gift-buying season.

>> The Smithsonian American Art Museum opens a mid-career retrospective of photographer Frank Gohlke on Friday. His large format images often feature the man-made landscape interacting with an uncontrollable Mother Nature. This is the last leg for the exhibit's national tour. Visit during regular hours, 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

>> The Mid City Artists have a lot going on this weekend. Friday, a group of them open a show at Art17 at Coldwell Banker, 1606 17th Street NW, with a reception 6 to 9 p.m., and a Meet the Artist event on Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m. Many of the same artists will also have working hanging at Biagio Fine Chocolate, with a reception Friday, 6:30 to 9 p.m. that will include chocolate and olive oil tastings (not together, we hope), along with wine from First Vine. Lastly, Mid City has their semi-annual Open Studios on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m. Download a map (PDF) here.

>> As if there hasn't been enough around town for photography lovers lately, we still highly recommend going to the Smith Farm Healing Arts Gallery tomorrow to hear Director of Photography for National Geographic Magazine, David Griffen, answer questions about what his job is like selecting images and tell us about his top ten favorite photographs. See the NatGeo exhibit while you're there, 5:30 to 8 p.m.

>> H&F Fine Arts opens two shows with a bit of spacey-ness in them. NASA Master Planner Alan Binstock uses deep space images and built structures to contrast between the tangible and the unknowable. Joan Belmar creates complimentary work; "worlds" created out of multi-media and optical techniques that result in clarity mixed with confusion. Opening Saturday, 5 to 8 p.m.

When our pals at Chicagoist forwarded us a link to their post about how the U.S. Supreme Court is actually going to consider whether to take up a lawsuit challenging President-Elect Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship, we thought it had to be a joke. But no, this is sort of really happening tomorrow, and although it's almost assured of going no further than merely appearing on Friday's court meeting schedule, it will bring with it a small army of weirdos who are still pushing this sad little conspiracy theory. There's a vigil planned for the steps of the Supreme Court tomorrow, so if you're looking to get an extra helping of crazy before the start of your weekend, stroll on by!

Friendly Reminder About National Christmas Tree Lighting

We already warned you, but just in case you are, for some totally insane reason, thinking of trying to drive or take a taxi anywhere near the White House in the next four hours, just say no! The National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony/pageant starts in one hour. Streets will be closed. Pedestrians will be EVERYWHERE. Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to travel by motor vehicle through this part of downtown. Thanks for your cooperation.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced today that the entire length of the National Mall will be opened to the public for the inauguration of Barack Obama on Jan. 20, a first for any modern presidential inauguration. Here's The AP story.

Previously, the far portions of the National Mall had been closed off for use as a staging area for the inaugural parade. The change will allow a lot more people to stand out in the cold and be a part of the ceremony; the PIC will also install large screens along the Mall so that everyone can see and hear what's going on. No tickets are needed to stand on the National Mall during the inaugural ceremony.

"This will be an Inauguration for all Americans," Mayor Adrian Fenty said in a press release sent out by the PIC.

Ted Leonsis: Friendliest Man In Town

Ted Leonsis has reached Facebook's limit of 5,000 friends. Leonsis has made more than <strike>3,900</strike>2,900 friends since mid-April, when he blogged that he had almost 2,100 and asked, in typically affable style, "if this is winning, why do I sometimes feel like such a loser for being so connected? :-)"

Well, Ted, we don't think it makes you a loser at all. In fact, you're a great Facebook friend. This week alone you've recommended two great movies that are playing for free over your recent venture, Snagfilms. Of course, after watching the karate/voodoo documentary, The Deadliest Man Alive, we kept hoping for anything at all about karate or voodoo in We Will Not Die Like Dogs. Instead it was about the African AIDS crisis. Upon further reflection, we don't think it was a sequel at all, but it was still a great recommendation.

That's really a perfect example of how social networking sites are great for sharing news, culture and personal achievements with acquaintances we don't have time to keep in close touch with otherwise, whether they're old friends or just someone with whom we've had one great conversation. In addition to being a good online neighbor, Ted is a technology giant and a pillar of his local and global community. If there was ever an appropriate champion for lifting the friend cap (no, not the fried cap, the friend cap), Ted Leonsis is the man to do it.

Readers, we'll bet some of you are friends with Ted as well, or have friends on the internet whom you wouldn't otherwise get to talk to as often. We invite you to share your opinions: How do you handle friend limits? Have you ever been unfriended by someone trying to stay under a limit? Was it Ted Leonsis? How should someone handle that sort of rejection from someone so popular? Do you request them again? Why would you do that? They just unfriended you. What are you thinking? Don't be creepy. Give them some time. Meanwhile, tell us your story.

Jostein Gulbrandsen performing at DC9 with Motel in 2007, photo by Jamie Onderdonk

Jazz guitarist Jostein Gulbrandsen's career has been on the upswing since the 2007 release of his debut, Twelve. The album was named one of the year's top five by The Village Voice and as a result, Gulbrandsen is slowly making a name for himself in New York's crowded jazz scene. He is also a friend of the District, coming to the city several times a year to perform with local musicians. Gulbrandsen will return to our fair city with performances on Sunday at the vibrant Bossa Bistro & Lounge and Monday at Blues Alley, a performance sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy.

"I know a lot of what’s going on in the D.C. scene and there's a lot of great stuff happening" he told DCist, "but my music might bring in some different elements."

Gulbrandsen's musical journey began in his native Norway, when he first picked up a guitar at the tender age of nine. After formal studies in Norway and the University of North Texas, he moved to New York in 2001 for graduate studies at the famed Manhattan School of Music. There, he encountered bassist Matt Grason, a frequent collaborator who will join Gulbrandsen for both performances. Local music fans will recognize Grason as the leader of the jazz/hip-hop collective, Motel, which was a featured performer at Unbuckled 7.

These concerts are a departure for Gulbrandsen, who has been focusing on his trio, but will be playing in a quartet setting with slightly different lineups each night. Local drumming ace Larry Ferguson will anchor the group along with Grason, but Sunday's performance will feature saxophonist Jason Gillenwater and pianist Megumi Yonezawa will perform at Blues Alley.

Listeners at these shows can expect music that is not necessarily characteristic of current trends in jazz.

"Mainly, the element of melody is key in my compositions," Gulbrandsen explained. "Usually the form of my songs are short. These days, people are getting into a complex approach."

The two quartets will be performing material from Twelve, along with newer material written for Gulbrandsen's trio, but adapted to the new setting. Gulbrandsen's music also reflects his Nordic roots and the European style of jazz that was an early influence, notably the recordings on the legendary label, ECM.

"I’m trying to meld the European and American elements of jazz, so hopefully my music will have something fresh and appealing to the listener."

The Jostein Gulbrandsen Quartet will perform on Sunday at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge at 9 p.m, call 202-667-0088 for cover information. On Monday, the band will play 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. Tickets are $18 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

In case you missed it, the Dulles Rail project, aka the Silver line, finally got official approval from the Federal Transit Administration for the first phase of the project yesterday. The approval allocated $5.2 billion for the Falls Church to Wiehle Avenue section of the line, while the extension to Dulles itself will come in the second phase. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters and the Office of Management and Budget still need to sign off on the project.

Chestnuts are not only for roasting on open fires. Each December, arts organizations cash in on the unfathomable frenzy for certain holiday favorites, Messiah and The Nutcracker. The former is Handel's most performed — let's face it, disturbingly over-performed — oratorio. It is without doubt a work of great beauty, which I could probably learn to love again in a few years if I had not had to perform in some version of it every year since I was a freshman music major. Still, if you just cannot face the holiday season without hearing it yet again, worry not: you have a bewildering array of opportunities.

>> The best place to hear this music is in a big stone cathedral, and we have one of those. Washington National Cathedral will be the backdrop for an annual Messiah presented by the cathedral choirs. December 5, 7:30 p.m.; December 7, 4 p.m.

>> For something completely different, check out the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Gospel Messiah in the Music Center at Strathmore on Friday. December 5, 8 p.m.

>> The National Philharmonic will perform Messiah twice this weekend, as well as an encore performance closer to Christmas, in the Music Center at Strathmore. December 6, 7, and 20, various times

>> For musical quality, the best bet is likely the National Symphony Orchestra, which will perform Messiah in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall on the weekend before Christmas. Not least for the voice of soprano Christine Brandes. December 18 to 21, various times

>> For something less polished but with amateur verve, try the annual Messiah presented by the Landon Symphonette and associated forces at the Landon School in Bethesda. December 20, 5 p.m.

>> Of course, the biggest kahuna of the participatory Messiah performances is the Kennedy Center Messiah Sing-Along. It's free, but the competition to get one of the seats in the Concert Hall can be intense. December 23, 8 p.m.

THE NUTCRACKER:
>> The Washington Ballet is again reprising Septime Webre's Washington-specific production of Tchaikovsky's Christmas ballet at the Warner Theater. With cherry blossoms and other local touches, Webre recasts the battle between the Nutcracker and the Mouse King as George Washington and King George III in the American Revolution. December 11 to 28, various times

>> If you must have the more traditional Nutcracker, with the Victorian sentimentalism, the Tchaikovsky, Joffrey Ballet returns to the Kennedy Center Opera House with its blockbuster production. December 11 to 14, various times

A memorial service for the victims of last week's terror attacks in Mumbai will be held this afternoon on the American University campus. The event, hosted by three Washington based Jewish organizations along with AU's South Asian Student Association and School of International Service, invites the public to "join the Indian and Jewish communities in expressing solidarity with the people of India." The memorial service is scheduled to run from 4:45-5:45 at the school's Mary Graydon Center.

'Skins Week 14 Preview: @ Baltimore

That’s What He Said: Last week, the Ravens creamed the Bengals as expected, while the Giants creamed the Redskins, which everyone should have expected. Defense, as usual, is the backbone of the Ravens’ organization – not good news for a ‘Skins team that managed only one touchdown Sunday against the Giants. The Ravens rank even higher than the Giants defensively (Baltimore is second overall). Meanwhile, Jason Campbell has been sacked more than any quarterback this year save 3, and running back Clinton Portis is still questionable for Sunday’s game against the Ravens because of a sore neck, a sprained knee, and various other injuries -- though he says he’s going to play. Should Portis not play, Campbell showed himself capable of picking up the slack Sunday – he had 34 rushing yards to Portis’ 22 Sunday and actually led the 'Skins on the ground. We’re pretty sure that wasn’t in the game plan.

Baltimore has finally become more than one dimensional on offense thanks to rookie quarterback Joe Flacco. But a bigger shout out goes to Baltimore’s running game, which is third in the league with a triplet running back system similar to the Giants. And last week, Mark Clayton led NFL wide receivers with five catches for 165 yards and one touchdown. The Ravens also rank tenth in points per game – a stat the Skins can only dream about right now. But Washington has the sixth best defense in the league, and rookie quarterbacks can always be pressured into making mistakes. DeAngelo Hall could make things interesting for Flacco. Hall’s interception Sunday against Manning the Younger ties him for the second most interceptions this year with 5. And we’re ready for a big game from Chris Horton, who is currently first in Pro Bowl fan voting for the NFC’s strong safety position. London Fletcher, who led the NFL in tackles last week, will be a game time decision due to his foot injury.

The 'Skins aren’t breaking the record books this year, but they have excelled in getting the job done. So if it takes a little smoke and mirrors from Devin Thomas to win Sunday, why not?

Let the Best Rookie Win: Both head coaches are rookies at their positions, but John Harbaugh has the Ravens at 8-4 and situated for a Wild Card spot, while Zorn is trying to keep his 'Skins in Wild Card contention at 7-5.

For the Chips N’ Dip Crowd (those of you there for the food, the beer, or because your boyfriend gave you no choice): Want to feel even more disgusted watching the game Sunday? Compare your starting salary to Baltimore's rookie quarterback Joe Flacco. This summer, Flacco signed a five-year, $30 million contract with $8.75 million guaranteed. But even Flacco could whine "unfair" compared to fellow rookie quarterback Matt Ryan's sweet deal of $72 million over six years (with $34.75 million guaranteed). We're surprised the auto industry hasn't tapped them for handouts already.
The media magnate said she will broadcast from the Kennedy Center's Opera House during the week of Jan. 20.

Washington is "the place to be,” she told the entertainment program.

The New York Times says Oprah will tape one show here for sure on Jan. 19, and then likely one more show that week, though the date is not yet confirmed. We'd put our money on Jan. 21.

We can almost hear her introducing her first show broadcast from our fair city now ...

"Hellooo DEE-CEEEEEeeeee!"

Information about how to get tickets will be posted on Oprah.com next week.

Good morning, Washington. We know a lot of you were sweating the fate of Bethesda-based Chevy Chase Bank, the largest local bank in the D.C. area, so we're definitely curious to hear your reaction to the news that it has been bought by Capital One Financial Corp. for $520 million. Other than their fantastically annoying credit card commercials, none of us has much experience with Capitol One's commercial banking arm, which has only been around in about five states for three years or so. There are a few branches of Capital One in Virginia, though - any of you have an account with one?

D.C. Council Bans Littering from Moving Vehicles: File this one under 'we can't believe this wasn't illegal before.' The Examiner reports that the D.C. Council voted to close a legal loophole that had up until now prevented D.C. police from ticketing drivers who throw garbage out of their car windows. Under the new rule, MPD officers will now be allowed to give out $100 citations to litterbug drivers. The bill also includes a new fine of between $100 and $250 for any person who is stopped for littering and refuses to provide his or her true name and address to the officer - not exactly sure how the city plans to collect such fines when they don't know the person's name or address, but sure, OK.

Man Who Died Was Diagnosed With Acid Reflux: The Post has more on the death of 39-year-old Northeast D.C. resident Edward Givens, the man who died yesterday just a few hours after being treated by paramedics. Givens reportedly called 911 complaining of chest pains and trouble breathing, but the EMTs who responded told him he had acid reflux, instructed him to take Pepto-Bismol, and then left. Givens died in his home a few hours later. The case, which comes just a short time after the city announced it had implemented sweeping reforms to its emergency medical services in the wake of the death of David Rosenbaum, is now under investigation.

Briefly Noted: MetroAccess predicted to nearly double ridership over next 5 years ... Dispute over security delays construction of King Memorial ... Man shot early Wed. evening on North Capitol Street ... D.C. debt limit bill advances ... Armed robbers, armored truck officer trade gunfire in Laurel.

This Day in DCist: In 2007, we were getting ready for the first real snow of the year, and in 2006, we noticed that a touring band had written some not so nice things about the U Street corridor after a bad night at DC9.

Remember the Christmas-themed White House Hannukah party invitations the Bushes sent out? Well the New York Post followed up today with news that the hubbub over the mistake forced the first family to send out a new round of invites yesterday, this time with a menorah on them and a note saying, "Please accept our apologies as the invitation you previously received had the incorrect artwork on it." Hopefully however many Jewish leaders there are who actually want to celebrate Hanukkah with the Bush family feel a little better now.

WJLA says there is a scary cloud of noxious dust coming from a construction site at 17th and H Streets NW. We confess we haven't noticed such a cloud, but at least a few workers in the area are complaining of symptoms like burning eyes and difficulty breathing, according the report. Have any of you noticed this?

Should D.C. Push Obama to Use "Taxation Without Representation" License Plates?

WTOP has a copy of a letter the D.C. Council sent to President-Elect Obama, urging him to place the District's "Taxation Without Representation" license plates on his presidential limousine. No big shock that the Council would push for the pro-D.C. voting rights symbol, but is it somewhat surprising that both Mayor Adrian Fenty and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton have said they will not press the issue with Obama?

Probably not. Fenty and Norton want to seen as focused on getting Norton's bill passed in the Senate, not pestering the President-Elect with something so small during the transition period. Still, given how confident both Fenty and Norton have publicly been on whether Obama supports their cause, it does come off as a little bit of a disconnect to let the Council carry all the water on the license plate issue. It may only be a symbol, but if Obama can't be bothered with such a small indication of support, how are disenfranchised D.C. residents supposed feel about that?

We know how to react when a has-been (sorry, “classic entertainer”) like Don Rickles points out fat people and tries to get them crying, or when ironic comics like Zach Galifiankis or Neil Hamburger blow up in righteous anger at their audiences.

But what do you call it when a comic wants to be your pal? The audience at Stella’s show at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue could have doubled for the crowd at a median Black Cat show, but with fewer beards and more earnestness. They clutched DVDs of Wet Hot American Summer or the Stella TV show, and if they didn’t come with merch, they shopped for Soviet realist posters of the comic group and faint beige T-shirts with their logo and cute-nerd faces.

These people were dedicated fans. The cult of Stella dates back to 1993, when group members Michael Ian Black, David Wain, and Michael Showalter formed 29 percent of the writing and acting staff of the MTV skit show The State. The show ended in 1995, but when David Wain makes an offhand reference to an upcoming DVD collection, the crowd’s cheers are deafening.

Black, Wain, and Showalter formed Stella in 1998, and have toured and put out skits even as their careers in more mainstream movies and TV shows have taken off. When Wain refers “my last movie, Role Models,” there’s a murmur of surprise: the movie is by far the most commercially successful that any Stella member has been involved with. As popular as they’ve become, Stella still draw the kinds of fans who wear fake mustaches, to prove that they remember jokes from a show that ran for one season in 2005.

The arrangement keeps everybody happy, even the opening acts. Eugene Mirman gave the room a truncated, 20-minute set, only a little bit recycled from his May set at the Arlington Draft House. Mirman treated the crowd like a group of friends he wanted to impress with the cool stuff he’d just read. “Before the election,” Mirman said, “I read an article in The New York Times about people in Philadelphia—in Fishtown—who were racist, but were still going to vote for Barack.” He let the people from Philadelphia “woo!” for a moment, then reacted to the article that dozens (or hundreds) of people in the room had probably read, too. “’Well, I don’t want him to pass all those laws for the blacks, but at least he’ll save my pension.’ As if he’s going to pass a bunch of black laws. ‘From now on, Wednesday will be called basketball!’”

Almost half of Mirman’s set consisted of him reading out polls and forms he’d filled out on the Internet, a disturbing/hilarious number of them goofing on racism. A Classmates.com survey asked him what city he wanted to live in. “A candy city that floats on the back of an eagle,” he said. “And is heavily segregated!” Mirman ambled off the stage without looking like he’d tried too hard, confident that he and the crowd had connected anyway.

Stella’s act was more rigidly planned, but the goal was the same: Make the audience feel like pals. Wain, Showalter, and Black gave the crowd ground rules like “number eight—feelin’ great” and “number nine—doin’ fine.” Since they were in a synagogue they asked the crowd to put away their swastikas. “I drew four extra lines on mine,” said Wain, pointing to his stomach, “so it just looks like a window.”

“I drew action lines on mine,” said Black, pointing to the small of his back. “Now it looks like a windmill.”

“That’s very green.”

”I’m a green nazi!”

The skits, such as they were, ran together and stuck to the general theme of “three guys acting strange.” They weren’t afraid to milk a joke. In a skit about the group’s “favorite party jams,” the ostensible joke was that Wain got on his groove to depressing acoustic ballads like “Tears in Heaven.”

“It’s about Eric Clapton’s son falling off a building!” said Black.

“And into a party!”

But Black got the biggest laugh when he danced to “Who Let the Dogs Out?” by holding his legs still and waving his arms like a balloon mascot outside of a car dealership. It killed. When Black got two more chances to show off (one of them in a joke about sexual positions), he deployed the car dealership dance.

There were slow, jokeless patches, whenever the group got to into its schtick of confusing words and names. When in doubt, there were dick jokes (like an extended series of “poems” to audience members who wanted them to undo their zippers), and there was mockery of Showalter and Wain. It wasn’t the sort of show that built momentum or hit dizzying heights. The crowd wanted to be with its surreal pals for a while, and for $30, that’s what it got.

After the show, Stella walked downstairs to sign merchandise and introduce a screening of Wet Hot American Summer. The questions were ultra-specific: Was the movie specifically about a Jewish summer camp?

”By definition,” said Black, “summer camp is Jewish.”

”You went to a Jewish summer camp,” said Showalter. “My camp, it just so happened that everyone was Jewish. It wasn’t actually a Jewish summer camp.”

“When I went to visit it,” said Wain, “it had Hebrew names on all the bunks!”

”Yeah,” said Showalter, “everyone who ever went there was Jewish.”

”And only spoke Hebrew,” said Black.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier announced this afternoon that five men have been arrested for the killing of 13-year-old Alonzo Robinson and shooting of four other people in Trinidad last July. The shooting spree was one of the worst incidents in a wave of increased violence in Trinidad that lead police to establish controversial checkpoints in the area. Police say the five men, all from the Kenilworth-Parkside area, sprayed gunfire in the neighborhood in an attempt to settle a cross-neighborhood dispute with members of the Trinidad neighborhood. One of the suspects was arrested in early July and has been cooperating with the police.

Words and photos by DCist contributor Martin Locraft

Vampire Weekend formed in New York City, recorded one album while each member was in the process of diving into the real world, became crazy popular thanks to blog ubiquity and a clever video, traveled the globe, and ultimately arrived at the 9:30 Club on Monday for a two-night stint. The lead singer is handsome, and they dress like their next stop is a laid-back Ivy League cocktail party. On the surface, they appear to be just what you'd expect: riding the waves
