We don't understand why Benjy Ferree is not a big star. The Three Stars alum plays roosty indie gems and has great stage presence — he's a funny and engaging and a strong performer. He's toured with Spoon and The New Pornographers and is signed to Domino Records (Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, etc). And his band is basically a D.C. supergroup, with Laura Harris of The Aquarium, Amy Domingues and Jonah Takagi from Garland of Hours, and Drew Mills from Blood Feather. And the new disc, Leaving the Nest, is great. But he doesn't seem to get much notice.

Amy Domingues is busy. Aside from being a full time cello teacher, and aside from being the go-to cellist for local musicians (having played on records by Fugazi, Bob Mould, Ted Leo, Jenny Toomey, and Benjy Ferree, among many others), Amy also has her own band, Garland of Hours. What happened to my Americana? Somewhere out there, crotchety old folkies, scruffy bluesmen, and maybe even an early alt. country pioneer or two are listening to Califone and wondering the same thing. And it’s true – this may not be your parents’ roots music, but we like it that way.

Monday: Everyone likes to start their week a little differently. Some of us, for instance, are pretty excited about kicking back at the Warehouse to Philly (originally from Hyattsville) cellist Monica McIntyre (and opening act Garland of Hours, featuring cellist Amy Domingues). And some of us are planning on going to DC9 for VOG (Va Doom) and Burnout (Iowa Doom). Mondays suck. You can either soothe yourself through the first of the week, or beat the holy crap out of it.
