The Humane Society of the United States has just released a new Humane Index of U.S. Cities. The site includes rankings for the top 25 most populous cities in the country, broken down by categories like number of retail shops that sell fur, or ratio of wildlife watchers to hunters, all presented in a pretty nifty interactive format that allows you to sort by category and compare one city to another. Yesterday we broached the idea of getting rid of the zoo's elephants, freeing them of their tight digs in Woodley Park and sending them someplace where they could romp around as nature intended. Today, we have two updates. It seems that things might not be as bad as we thought.

Earlier this year, Toni, one of the National Zoo's resident elephants, was euthanized after a two-decade-long struggle with arthritis in her legs. While zoo officials maintained that Toni's condition was pre-existent, animal rights activists claimed that the tight quarters of the zoo's Elephant House only worsened her mental and physical health. Though an isolated incident, Toni's death brought to light an issue that has long afflicted zoos across the country -- are certain animals meant to be kept and displayed?

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has unveiled a billboard at Lafayette Square across from the White House featuring a large photo of Ronald Reagan reading "Win one for the Gipper / Animal fats DOUBLE your risk of Alzheimer's" According to the group's website, the billboard will be run nationally.
