Good morning, Washington. Not too upset about the coming Metro fare hike, are we? WJLA is reporting that only four people showed up to last night's hearing on the measure. Of course, the meeting was held way out in Reston and was only the first of six opportunities that Metro riders will have to voice their opinion on the price increase. Maybe you're just biding your time. Tax Scandal Grows Even Bigger: This is...

Good morning, Washington. Flickr user zenfrisbee went down to the West Lawn yesterday to catch the festivities surrounding the Dalai Lama's visit and acceptance of a Congressional Gold Medal. China, naturally, had "solemnly demanded" the cancellation of the event, which saw President Bush appear with the Dalai Lama in public -- something no sitting U.S. president has done before. Bush dismissed China's concerns over the event, saying he didn't think it would severely damage relations...

Here's some video of the Dalai Lama arriving in Washington today from YouTube. Tibet's spiritual leader will receive a Congressional Gold Medal tomorrow at the U.S. Capitol. The medal, which accompanies a resolution passed last year that recognizes him as "a leading figure of moral and religious authority," will be presented during a ceremony attended by Preident Bush, representing the first time a sitting U.S. president has met the Dalai Lama in public. If...
The last time the Dalai Lama was in Washington, not even spiritual enlightenment could help him figure out why District residents still lacked voting rights. And now that he's coming back, maybe he'll have a little word with President Bush and Congressional Republicans about it. Tibet's exiled spiritual leader will be in town next week to accept a Congressional Gold Medal. The medal, which accompanies a resolution passed last year that recognizes him as "a...
Good morning, Washington. We have to admit it — we have a soft spot for cheerleader-related crime. And this is a good one: the AP (via WTOP) reports on the case of Anna Lois Miles, a cheerleading coach who is charged with holding an illegal gambling event to raise money to... wait for it... repay bail money she borrowed from the parents of a girl she coached after being arrested for writing bad checks!...

Politics and Prose, 5015 Connecticut Ave. NW, 7:00 p.m. TUESDAY With the glut of celebrities proclaiming themselves Buddhists, it's sometimes hard to pin down the historical and ethical roots of this ancient religion. Good morning, Washington. Today will be mostly cloudy and chilly - highs in the 60s. Matthew Bradley posted this photo to DCist photos, taken at the Dalai Lama's talk yesterday at the MCI Center. The W. Times has a short story about the talk where they report the 1-hour talk was on "compassion". Did you attend? What else did the Tibetan leader speak on?
Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, took a rare swipe at the United States, saying he was puzzled why residents in the capital of the world's oldest democracy have no Congressional voting rights.Continue reading "A Spiritual Take on D.C. Voting Rights"
Good morning, Washington. If you are lucky enough to work for the government or elsewhere that follows the federal work calendar, many of you have today off in observance of Veterans Day. At Arlington Cemetery a free public wreath-laying ceremony and ceremony at the Memorial Amphitheater are planned for 11:00 a.m. If you are chained behind a desk we plan to provide the usual distractions. For more information about what's operating on a normal schedule...
For your buying pleasure this week, we have tickets recently on sale, tickets going on sale in the next few days, or just tickets that, in general, you need to be getting on.
Last week we sent you to a recent Craigslist post alleging that Al Qaeda was drugging people in Georgetown. After months of being relatively Craiglist free, this post sent us back to a steady Craigslist habit. It looks like 3 p.m. guy has disappeared and middle-finger-guy only occasionally shows up, but the Rants and Raves section still provides entertainment for those wasting time during a slow work day. Today's RnR already has a rather unsophisticated "proof" of the nonexistence of God based on the problem of evil, the usual sexual queries and answers that litter RnR, and a meaningless poll that's bound to get its share of both cooperative responses and flames. But sift through some material and you'll find some real gems. DCist laughed out loud when we clicked on this tasteless post connecting recent judicial events with Hootie. A doctored photo of the Dalai Lama, which pops up all the time, also made us chuckle.
