The Washington Project for the Arts' fourth annual Experimental Media Series begins tonight with an opening reception at the WPA's Massachusetts Avenue space from 7 to 9 p.m. This year's exhibit, When Absence Becomes Presence, explores time based media in the forms of sound art, music, literary readings, video art, and sound recording, and is presented in partnership with the Phillips Collection.

Many apologies for bringing you the arts agenda a day late this week -- we're getting darned worn out by all these great events going on lately. Visual art continues to stampede the city throughout April, and this weekend brings us a four-day festival as well as the continuation of the two huge exhibition projects sweeping the metro area. Get your fill below, just remember to stay hydrated as you enter the middle of this marathon.

>> Celebrate the grand opening of the Honfleur Gallery this Saturday at 7 p.m. This very welcome addition to the city's art scene is located near the Anacostia metro and appropriately begins its life with East of the River, a mixed media exhibition that includes both professionals and first-timers who celebrate their history with the area. Especially notable is the work by John Muller from DreamCity, an organization that does some serious community building in D.C. — so much they've earned a nomination for the Mayor's Art Award, which will be handed out next month at the Kennedy Center. Muller presents a photographic storyboard of DreamCity's upcoming play Southside, "a call for non-violence within the communities and neighborhoods of not only Washington, D.C., but throughout the country." While we love art for its own sake, we love D.C. even more and are excited to see a gallery focused so closely on its community and the people living in its own backyard. Remember last week when we told you to mark your calendar for this evening? Force yourself away from the One Tree Hill season premiere and head down to the Corcoran Hammer Auditorium for Night 1 of the second Experimental Media Series. Presented by the Washington Project for the Arts\Corcoran, tonight promises Cowboys, Clichés, Codes, and Conspiracies.

Last month the Experimental Media Series, a showcase of video/audio mashups and original work, debuted at the Corcoran. The first part in a three part series, featuring the video work of Noah Angel, Champ Taylor, and D.C. blogger Rob Parrish, ended in a rawkus punk delivery by The Videohippos. That performance incorporated gas mask microphones, Mario Paint visuals, and sound that smashed iPod 110 decibel caps. Needless to say it's gonna be loud when the Experimental Media Series continues tonight at the Hammer Auditorium. Tonight's curator, Djakarta, has included the audio work of Joe Reinsel with videos by Brian Twilley, Chris Royalty and others. Holly Bass (right) will perform ROMP, her own tribute to the isolation culture of in-ear headphones and music inverts.
