Welcome back to work, you godless heathens who had yesterday off. While you were off frolicking in the sunshine with flowers in your hair and puppies at your feet, the rest of us were here, slaving away. OK fine, maybe we spent a little time playing with our new avatar feature (read more here). But we only did it in a totally serious manner, devoid of any fun or whimsy. Speaking of fun, this ridiculous...

Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse. The deaths of two firefighters shook Bostonist this week. Boston's firefighters bent over backwards all week long - first, they fought flames pouring from the Boston Tea Party museum, and then a restaurant fire killed two and injured many more. Their efforts make everything else - like Tom...
When the advance promo single from The Beanstalk Library landed in our hands in the midst of that blinding heat wave in early August, it seemed perfectly timed. The one-two punch of “Elephantitis”, a rushing, gushing power-popper, and “Fake It”, with its requisite jangle and harmonies, was the perfect antidote to midsummer malaise. Now the proper full-length, America at Night, is finally out, and the band’s finally got the album they’ve been working on since...
Starting at 2 p.m. today, trains will be operating in manual mode above ground at no faster than 45 mph as rail operators and track inspectors keep an extra eye on the rails. Excessive heat can cause “kinks” or bending of the steel rails, and the speed restriction and manual--instead of automatic--train control, combined with ongoing track inspections help identify any piece of track that may be affected by the heat. In other words, expect delays on your way home from work tonight, and to get home a little later than you're used to. On the plus side, you can now email a link to this post to your boss as a solid reason to leave a little early. Good luck out there.
Welcome back to work, Washington. This week promises not only to feel longer than normal thanks to its coming on the heels of a holiday, but also hot enough that you might want to consider setting up an ad-hoc shower in your office, as there's little chance you'll get there without breaking into a sweat first. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has issued a Code Orange alert because of the heat wave, and...
Though the galleries are usually slow in the summer, we still get the occasional rainstorm during the drought. And what better weekend to take a walk outside and sooth your overheated body than this one, which looks to be the blessed fever break from our soul-crushing heat wave? When you're ready to hit the cool(er) Friday evening air, many of the city's galleries will be open and waiting with heaven-sent A/C and thirst quenching libations....
Just a little public service announcement for our readers who drive. If you by any chance need to initiate or renew your vehicle registration this month and require an inspection, you'll need to get to the SW Inspection Station earlier than normal. The Half Street SW station will be observing code red heat advisory service hours beginning today and at least through Wednesday, which means they'll be opening at 5 a.m. and closing at 1...
Massive deluges, flooded out streets, crime emergencies. The Washington region has been hit with some extreme elements already this summer, and, according to our friends over at Capital Weather, we are about to enter a "dangerous, excessive heat event." How dangerous and excessive? Just peep their graphic, which indicates there will be a gradual elevation of the temperature, followed by the sky turning red and the rivers running with blood. CW states that the coming...
Today's nice, isn't it? I think we can probably kiss any chance of a big snowstorm goodbye for this winter, which leaves me a little pissed at missing out on the giddiness I experience during blizzards. You folks out there who don't appreciate the beauty and wonder of feet of snow -- and the days off that go along with it -- are in luck. Why, you ask? Because of this weekend's impending heat wave....
