'19th Hole' Upgrade at H Street Country Club

It's only natural to want to top off a grueling afternoon or evening of sporting competition – in this case, mini-golf – with a couple of cold ones. Luckily for cocktail fans, at H Street Country Club, that post-game refreshment isn't limited to a selection of beers shoved in a cooler on the back of the golf cart. Thanks to the bar's newly expanded drinks menu, and the magic touch of mixologist turned consultant Gina Chersevani, revelers and competitors alike can sip on a Pebble Beach, a Mr. Hendrick's and a few other hand-crafted cocktails that include fresh and unique ingredients.

Due to celebrations on H Street NE and U Streets NW, there will be several roads near major intersections which will be closed to cars today. The Greater U Street Parade and Festival kicked off at 11 this morning: the parade route winds from 10th to 13th Streets, 13th Street from U to V Streets, and then on V Street from 13th to 14th Street -- the latter of which will be closed to traffic until 6 p.m., after its official renaming to "Langston Hughes Way" at noon by Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham. H Street NE, meanwhile, will be closed to traffic between 10th and 14th Streets NE for the 2009 H Street Festival until 9 p.m.

The shop in question is in the 800 block of H Street NE, located in the same strip mall as a McDonald's.

D.C. police say they are investigating a daytime shooting in the 1200 block of H Street NE. An adult female was shot at about 12:54 p.m. at 1275 H Street NE.

Trinidad Firehouse Profiled in NY Times

Read this fascinating story from The New York Times on the D.C. Fire Department's Engine Company 10, by all accounts the busiest firehouse in the country. These Trinidad firefighters at the "House of Pain" spend most of their time not fighting fires, but rather serving as emergency medical responders.

About 80 percent of the calls handled by Engine Company 10 are medical emergencies because the firehouse serves one of the city’s poorest areas, where few residents have health insurance, doctors’ checkups are rare, and medical problems are left to fester until someone dials 911.
The story also makes the point that due to a trending decrease in the number of fires nationwide, many fire departments rely on these medical calls to keep their firefighters employed. Still, it's hard not to see the underlying truths of the current health-care reform debate: our poorer residents don't get good, regular medical care, and the burden of that broken system ends up in the laps of our emergency responders and emergency rooms.

Streetcar Rail Work to Close Two Intersections on H Street NE

The District Department of Transportation is moving ahead with the installation of streetcar slabs and tracks along H Street NE, despite the fact that the streetcars themselves still have several planning hurdles to overcome before they'll be cleared to start running. But the laying of tracks will cause two intersections on H Street to be temporarily closed this week.

Chinatown Archway Work to Close Part of H Street Overnight

You've probably noticed the ongoing construction surrounding the Chinatown Archway at H and 7 Streets NW. The Archway itself has been covered up for several weeks, and the renovation work is expected to wrap up before the end of August. In order to complete the construction, DDOT plans to close H Street entirely between 6th and 7th Streets NW overnight tonight. The 600 block of H Street will be closed from midnight until to approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning while crews move large equipment needed for the renovations into place. Drivers are instructed to follow posted signs, and use F Street or I Street to detour around the area.

District Department of Transportation director Gabe Klein is set to meet with the public tonight to provide an update on the epically delayed plans for a streetcar line along H Street NE. The project is the second of two stalled streetcar plans, the other along South Capitol Street in Anacostia. In advance of tonight's big meeting, which is being co-hosted by Advisory Neighborhood Commissions 5B, 6A and 6C, the Washington Business Journal's Jonathon O'Connell provides a preview.

Via the Post's Get There blog, Pepco is reporting a major power outage affecting the H Street NE corridor, along with other spots in Northeast D.C. Roughly 1,400 customers are currently affected by the outage, according to Pepco's outage map, with an estimated restoration time currently slated for 5 p.m.

H Street Development, Delays

Written by former Editor-in-Chief Ryan Avent

Opening tonight is H Street Country Club, the much anticipated, long awaited indoor mini-golf course/Mexican eatery in Northeast. We’ve heard rumors about the DC-themed holes bordering on two years now. Chalk up their logo, which says "Est. 2008," to overzealousness. Even the hard hat tour in February 2009 showed a place still in development; there wasn’t a blade of fake grass in sight. Last night we had the chance to be among the first to test out the course, margarita in hand, at a press preview.

The D.C. Council earlier today passed an amended version of the noise bill first introduced by Tommy Wells and Mary Cheh that was born out of Ward 6 resident David Klavitter's crusade to put an end to amplified street preachers keeping him awake at his home near H Street NE. But Wells and Cheh actually voted against this bill, after it was basically gutted by an amendment introduced by Ward 5 Council member Harry Thomas Jr. that was a major concession to union groups.

As we reported last week, Georgetown residents should have been ready for some rude awakenings over the weekend -- and rude awakenings they received.

When we told you about David Klavitter's struggles against a noisy group of demonstrators on H Street NE a few weeks back, most everyone seemed to agree that while free speech is an important principle, it's not one that everyone has to exercise using a loud amplifier. But today the D.C. Council seemed to disagree.

David Klavitter doesn't blog about presidential politics, sports or trashy entertainment gossip. No, he just wants some peace and quiet, dammit.

FRIDAY:

Via City Desk, the Dupont Current (not available online) has a short piece about how the Logan Circle advisory neighborhood commission has given the go-ahead for the P Street Whole Foods to continue selling single-sale beers in the grocery store. The decision reportedly comes after eight months of such sales at the Whole Foods “without major conflict,” but the Current notes that just around the corner on 14th Street, the reputable Barrel House Liquors is...

Via bloomingdale (for now), it looks like Harris Teeter has committed to open a location in a new development project called Constitution Square at 1st and M Streets NE, right next to the New York Ave. Metro station. The news was first posted on the ANC 6C05 blog maintained by commissioner Alan Kimber. Kimber reported that Harris Teeter had originally been interested in an approx. 40,000 sq. ft. space at 3rd & H Streets NE...

The annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund begin on Friday, and the city will see a number of changes in traffic patterns and road closures this weekend as a result. Here's what you should plan around: Streets closed to vehicles: Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 19, until 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 21 * Pennsylvania Avenue, NW between 17th Street and 20th Street, NW * 19th Street, NW...

As is the custom around these parts, we would like to take a moment to thank this weeks' advertisers on DCist. AMEX Urban Adventures, because big cities are full of little adventures. DC Vote, with an event on October 23rd. Look Me In the Eye, which is apparently an instant best seller. Ambition Facing West, starting today at the H Street Playhouse. Kris Racer left the punk scene to do some solo soul searching. The former frontman for Ohio based Tagline is being taken very seriously by critics, with an acoustic presence comparable to Elliot Smith and Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carabba. He sings with sincerity, speaking to the twenty-somethings across the country about work, relationships, and the future. But Kris isn’t just another moody musician. There’s a nerdy quirkiness that separates him from the rest, and...

We told you long ago, in 2005 that is, that the District planned to roll out 788 new bus shelters as part of a $150 million deal with Clear Channel Outdoor. The shelters are finally starting to slowly creep across the city. On 8th Street between Capitol Hill proper and H Street NE, at least four shelters have been ripped out and are in the process of being replaced with the fancy new digs....

MONDAY >> At the ripe young age of 24, Patrick Wolf has already achieved a lot: three albums of brooding electronica and orchestral pop, modeling campaigns for Burberry, headlines in the British tabloids and at least one on-stage altercation that found the lupine violinist attacking his strung-out drummer with a cymbal. Drama notwithstanding, Wolf's latest, the surprisingly upbeat The Magic Position, is undoubtedly one of this year's best. Come see what all the fuss is...

At the close of last night's concert at the 2007 Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, Executive Producer Charlie Fishman said his friend and mentor, the great Dizzy Gillespie (pictured), who was the focus of this year's proceedings, chose to name his last big band the United Nation (in the singular) Jazz Orchestra to show the oneness of humanity. Fishman went on to say that Dizzy often told his colleagues that human beings all share two characteristics:...

For the last eight years, Conner Contemporary Art has been one of the creative hubs of Dupont Circle with its focus on emerging and experimental artists. Located on the north end, it has served as a entryway to the neighborhood, leading into the plethora of neighborhood galleries, bookstores, and craft shops. But the gallery announced today that it will soon be shifting homes to Trinidad, in the large, 12,000 sq. ft. former auto body shop...

Sad but true: the Post has some great coverage of the closing night at Common Share on Friday. The bar, located on 18th Street NW south of the Adams Morgan strip and just north of Florida Avenue, was one of the cheaper places in the city, with beers going for $2. While there are rumors that the bar may reopen elsewhere, possibly the H Street NE strip, we'll sure miss the inexpensive brew and laid...

Doors 9 p.m. $8. >> The charity organization Bartending for Change hosts a benefit for Food For All at a happy hour from 6:30...
