Caps Briefing: Bustin' Loose!

On a night when the Caps nearly came from behind to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team did something else to help cement their identity as a D.C. institution. With 8:35 remaining in the third period, and both teams readying for a faceoff in the Capitals' defensive end, the team's sound crew played Chuck Brown's "Bustin' Loose" over the arena speaker system.

USMNT's Charlie Davies Injured in Parkway Collision

Wire reports now confirm that a fatal early-morning car accident on the GW Parkway did indeed involve U.S. Men's National soccer team forward Charlie Davies. Davies was not behind the wheel at the time of the accident. WTOP reported that the collision, which occurred at about 3:15 a.m., claimed at least one fatality and seriously injured two others. One look at the car involved in the wreck, and it's understandable that Davies' injuries -- which have required hours of surgery -- are being described as "possibly career-threatening." (Although as of 5 p.m., the U.S. Soccer Federation is backing off of that assessment, calling the effect of Davies' injuries on his future "unclear.") Steve Goff's SoccerInsider twitter account first reported the news, and confirmed that Davies, who is still under the knife, did not suffer "life threatening" injuries.

A elderly man was rescued from an apartment fire in Glover Park earlier this morning. The fire broke out at around 10 a.m. in a first floor unit of a three-story apartment building at 2316 40th Place NW. D.C. Fire/EMS spokesperson Pete Piringer said firefighters pulled the unconscious man, who is approximately 70 years-old, out of the apartment under pretty heavy smoke conditions. Rescue workers successfully resuscitated the man and he was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The fire, which has since been knocked down, is said to have caused significant damage, but was apparently confined to the one apartment.

D.C. police say they are investigating a daytime shooting in the 1200 block of H Street NE. An adult female was shot at about 12:54 p.m. at 1275 H Street NE.

Metro reports that as of 12:43 p.m., regular service has resumed on the Blue and Yellow Lines after this morning's collision. A Metro employee is believed to have been struck by a six-car train while on the tracks between the Braddock Road and National Airport stations. The male employee, whose identity has not been released, is said to be alive but in serious condition at a nearby hospital. The incident is currently under investigation, but earlier delays on the Blue and Yellow lines should soon be abating.

Man Struck By Train Between Braddock Road and National Airport

A man who is believed to be a Metro employee was struck by a train at about 10:40 a.m this morning on the tracks between the Braddock Road and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport stations. The employee, whose identity Metro has not yet released, was taken to a local hospital and is in unknown condition at this time. and is believed to be in serious condition.

Bus Driver Who Hit Jogger Tested Negative for Drugs, Alcohol

The Metrobus driver who struck 30-year-old jogger Amanda Mahnke at the intersection of Connecticut and Florida Avenues NW last week was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to a statement given to WTOP's Adam Tuss by Metro spokesperson Lisa Farbstein. No charges have been filed in the crash, and the identity of the driver has not yet been released. Mahnke, who is the communications director for Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA), is reported to be in stable condition currently at George Washington University Hospital. An MPD investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Two Metro Workers Injured at West Falls Church

Two Metro workers were injured Wednesday evening after two rail cars hit each other in the rail yard at West Falls Church, the Post is reporting. Thankfully, the two employees suffered injuries that are being described as "non-life threatening," though they were transported for treatment to Inova Fairfax Hospital.

There was an electrical explosion in the 1500 block of 19th Street NW at around 10:30 a.m. this morning. A crew of contractors was working on an outdoor, above ground electrical supply at the time, and two workers were injured in the incident. One of the workers is reported to be in serious condition resulting from burns received in the explosion, according to D.C. Fire/EMS.

Diane Rehm Injured in Freak Accident

WAMU's Diane Rehm wasn't behind the microphone for her regular 2-hour Friday slot of The Diane Rehm Show today, because she was reportedly injured in one of those bizarre accidents that seem like only happen on TV sitcoms. Filling in for the host, Susan Page of USA Today reported that Rehm was running across the street on Thursday when her heel got caught in the leg of her pants. As a result, Rehm tripped, and she managed to break her pelvis during the fall. Talk about bad luck. She'll now be out for at least a few weeks while she recuperates. We wish her a speedy recovery.

A construction worker fell down a shaft in a building under construction near the intersection of 1st and K Streets NE around 9 a.m. this morning. D.C. Fire/EMS responded to a call of a worker who had fallen at 90 K Street NE. The man fell about 20 feet, according to fire department spokesperson Pete Piringer. A crane is in use at the scene to help remove the injured worker.

Early word from WMATA that a person was struck by an Orange Line train at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metro station at 11:18 a.m. The six-car train was headed in the direction of New Carrollton when it struck a person who was on the tracks as the train pulled into the station. Trains are now sharing one track through the station, which will likely result in delays of up to 30 minutes on the Orange Line until mid-afternoon. No word yet on who the person was, their condition or whether they were on the tracks intentionally. UPDATE 12:04 p.m.: Metro now says that preliminary reports indicate the train struck a male customer who was on the tracks intentionally. UPDATE 12:14 p.m. WMATA confirms the man has died.

At least six people were shot in four separate shooting incidents overnight, WJLA is reporting. One of the victims, who was shot in the head near the intersection of Irving and 24th Streets SE, died of his injuries, while another is said to be in critical condition after a shooting in the 1800 block of Birney Place SE. Four other people suffered non life-threatening injures. The other two shooting incidents took place in the 2600 block of Stanton Road SE and the 200 block of W Street NW.

Cause of Death at Meridian Hill Park Uncertain

Metropolitan Police Department officials are investigating the death of Benjamin Koomen, a genetic diagnostic laboratory supervisor who was found near Meridian Hill Park on Sunday morning. Koomen, 34, died at 3:30 p.m. on August 9 as a result of injuries he sustained, which DCist first glossed after a reader discovered blood at the park. MPD Assistant Chief Diane Groomes said that the cause of death has not been determined and that police are still awaiting results of both the autopsy and an ongoing investigation by the homicide unit. Police in the Public Information office, however, said investigators have ruled out foul play. Koomen's friends and coworkers have reacted to this unexpected tragedy with an outpouring of sadness and grief. One friend describes him as an exceptionally bright person who should not have died as he did, while others have flooded his Facebook page with notes of remembrance. No doubt, the lingering questions about how his death came to pass have only compounded that grief.

Ay carumba -- to think, we were all set for a tranquil evening on the sports front, with no local games on the schedule. We're definitely sure, though, that this was not the kind of news that the Nationals were hoping for on their day off and after closing out two consecutive home sweeps: rookie pitcher Jordan Zimmermann has blown out his throwing elbow and will require a ligament-replacement procedure. That's right, Tommy John surgery.

It's certainly been a weird day. Between the Metro station elevator rescue, water main breaks and questionable police behavior, why should we be surprised that someone drove a truck right into a building?

Partial Ceiling Collapse at Cannon HOB

Several sections of ceiling tile on the 3rd floor of the Cannon House Office Building fell down this morning, injuring a U.S. Capitol Police officer, The Hill is reporting. The ceiling pieces, which The Hill describes as "a few" tiles but The Post says was a 15-foot section, fell at about 10 a.m., sending FEMS responders to the scene. The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The building is over 100 years old, and overdue for major renovations.

We linked to a DC Kaleidoscope account of last night's shooting in the Park View neighborhood in the Morning Roundup, but here's the MPD's statement on the incident, sent to neighborhood email lists last night by Third District Inspector Jacob Kishter.

A shooting occurred at Park Ave and Quebec. One adult female was struck in the leg and was transported to an area hospital. A second adult male was also struck in the upper torso and attempted to drive away in his vehicle causing him to crash near Quebec and Warder Streets. He was transported to an area hospital in serious condition. The matter is currently being investigated by the Third District Detectives.

<strike>Nine</strike> Seven Dead in Red Line Crash; No Answers Yet on Cause

UPDATE: City officials are sticking to seven confirmed dead, despite earlier news reports that nine people died. The two additional reported deaths may or may not have been due to confusion about the two critical patients -- we'll continue to monitor reports.

D.C. Fire/EMS is reporting an apartment fire on the first floor of a residential building at 253 V Street NW. Streets in the surrounding area, including V Street, 2nd St. NW, and 3rd St. NW are currently blocked off as firefighters work to control the blaze. At least one adult female is being treated for minor smoke inhalation.

D.C. Fire/EMS is reporting an explosion at a Southeast D.C. home this afternoon that critically injured at least one person. It's looking like a propane tank exploded inside the basement of a house at 1127 46th Street SE. FOX5 is reporting that a 49-year-old man who was inside the home is in critical condition after suffering second and third-degree burns from the explosion and subsequent fire. Fire crews remain on the scene, and there's some concern that the house could collapse.

UPDATE: WTOP is now reporting that the man died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Witnesses at the station are saying he intentionally jumped in front of the train.

The Southeast Division leaders were missing enough talented players to field a respectable power play. Alexander Semin, a former first-round pick who had been leading the NHL in scoring, was injured. Sergei Fedorov -- frequent All-Star, holder of multiple Stanley Cup rings, and the highest scoring Russian-born player in NHL history -- was injured. Boyd Gordon, a former first round draft pick who once centered Jaromir Jagr, was injured. John Erskine, the team's toughest defenseman, was injured. Jeff Schultz, a former first round pick and the team's tallest defenseman, was injured. Mike Green, a former first round pick who led NHL blue-liners in goal scoring last season and was first-team All-Star, was injured.

Someone fell on the tracks at the Friendship Heights Metro station at around noon. Various reports indicate that the person was struck by the train and that they are unconscious, but so far no more details are available about their condition. You should expect major delays in both directions on the Red line due to this incident, which is being compounded by an earlier switch malfunction outside of Rhode Island Avenue. that's been fixed, but created residual delays also. Check back for updates. 1:55 p.m.: Both Friendship Heights and Rhode Island Ave. Metro stations have been cleared and normal Red line service has resumed. The Examiner reports that the man who fell on the tracks is now conscious.

Breaking from WMATA: Someone's been struck by a train at Suitland Metro station. The reports we're getting is that the unidentified individual went completely under the train, and that the odds they are still alive are slim. The station is temporarily closed and trains are turning back at Naylor Road station. There is currently no train service between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue, and the Green line is going to be seriously delayed in both directions for at least the next several hours, if not longer. MORE: Metro says investigators have told them it looks like a suicide attempt, that the person was on the tracks intentionally. UPDATE 1:13 p.m. Suitland Metro has reopened. Trains are sharing one track between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue, so continue to expect Green line delays.

A car struck a Metrobus at 16th and U Streets SE, near Good Hope Rd. SE, at 11:50 a.m. this morning, resulting in 16 people reported injured. The Post says the driver of the car ran a red light before it hit the bus. Two people were in the car, and a driver and 13 passengers were on the B2 route bus. All of the injuries appear to be minor.

Just yesterday, the first reader question Hockey News columnist Adam Proteau answered about the entire NHL came from a Caps fan frustrated about the lack of information about Brian Pothier's recovery from a serious concussion. Pothier missed the second half of last season and all of the playoffs, and was believed close to retirement. But one frustrated fan wanted to know for sure.
