Saveur delves into the topic of what the presidential candidates and other D.C. figures eat for breakfast. The majority of the interviewees listed the expected - oatmeal, cereal, toast, eggs, or coffee. For instance, Mayor Adrian Fenty eats a typical runner's breakfast - oatmeal, bananas, and tea with honey. Also notable from the list: Barack Obama eats four to six eggs every morning (that's a lot of eggs!); House Speaker Nancy Pelosi eats chocolate ice......

Well that was quick. We just got word that the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform apparently has scheduled a markup tomorrow on legislation that would gut the District's current gun regulations. As you can read earlier, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and Council member Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) have tried to preempt Congress, but the committee doesn't seem too impressed. We don't yet have a time for the markup, but the folks at......

As we mentioned this morning, today the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is holding a hearing to discuss legislation that would do away with the District's newly-issued regulations on gun ownership. According to the pro-gun crowd, the city's regulations are still restrictive enough to violate the Supreme Court's June decision holding the District's handgun ban to be unconstitutional. Of course, Congress stepping up to re-write local gun laws isn't anything new; the twist......

We expect this from Rep. Mark Edward Souder (R-Ind.), but Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi? Say it ain't so. The Hill is reporting that Pelosi may allow legislation to come to a vote that would do away with the city's current ban on semi-automatic guns, trash the registration requirement for all guns and allow District residents to purchase guns in Virginia and Maryland and bring them into the city. But in a surprising twist,......

With the District's new baseball stadium having opened on time and within the estimated budget, it looks like the infamous Capitol Hill Visitor Center is getting jealous. But it looks like good news is on the way -- the visitor center may finally open this year. According to D.C. Metrocentric, the majority of the work on the long-delayed project is all but done, and the main contractor is expecting a formal opening in October or......

Activists gathered at the White House yesterday alongside more than 1,500 Tibetan refugees to protest the Chinese government's crackdown on Tibetan demonstrators, according to the Washington Post. Buddhist monks were joined by a few American sympathizers in their efforts to persuade President Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies at the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Tibetan sympathizers have a powerful ally in U.S. House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who yesterday urged President Bush to consider a......

To say D.C. is not known for its fashion sense is an understatement. The people in our fine city get slammed again and again for their inability to dress themselves in anything other than career wear. Luckily this holiday shopping season offers a little incentive in the form of trunk shows for those of us who'd like to look better and help us score some spiffy new duds. As gifts, of course. Trunk shows are......

The anti-gay, right wing group Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) will present "raw and unedited" footage shot at this year's Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco at the National Press Club at 1 p.m. tomorrow. AFTAH president Peter LaBarbera specifically targets Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi with this conference, urging her "to do the right thing by condemning the public nudity and perversions — and blatant anti-Christian bigotry — that occurred in her......

WTOP is reporting that D.C. police are investigating a weekend attack near Shaw nightclub Be Bar as a hate crime. The victim, an intern who works for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Human Rights Campaign, was first shouted at by his assailant with a derogatory term for homosexual, and then beaten up. The victim was taken to an area hospital and has since been released. The incident took place at 10th and O Streets NW in......

Just this week, GQ published their annual "50 Most Powerful People in D.C." list. Populated by the likes of Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Karl Rove and Tim Russert, the list better describes the movers and shakers in "Washington", but not the District. And since we're snobs about local news and happenings, we threw together a little list of the people who really exercise influence in or over the lives of people who live and work......

Yesterday, we told you about the Associated Press' story that claimed Smithsonian officials altered a Museum of Natural History exhibit on climate change in order to make it less controversial. Subsequently, the Smithsonian issued a statement denouncing the AP report and the allegations made by Robert Sullivan, a former associate director at the National Museum of Natural History. The statement also claimed that the exhibit was not the subject of either internal or external political......

This weekend, as Washingtonians celebrated Earth Day with Anacostia River cleanups and tree plantings at the National Zoo, the Post highlighted the Capitol Power Plant, a coal-burning blight to Southeast. Thanks to Senators Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the familiar smokestacks continue to burn coal in the heart of the District, a clear violation of the Clean Air Act. In 2000, when officials wanted to stop using the dirtiest of fossil fuels, the......

Attending Saturday's White House Correspondents dinner continues to get less and less appealing. First, it was announced that Rich Little, a comedian whose popularity peaked in the 1970s, would host. Compared to Stephen Colbert's able hosting last year, we weren't terribly excited about seeing Little's famous Richard Nixon impression. Now it turns out that American Idol's latest cast-off, the adorable yet dubiously talented Sanjaya Malakar, will be there too. In an apparent coup by People......

Last time we live blogged the House debate on District voting rights, things didn't go too well. We're hoping for a bit of an improvement today. From what we've heard on the Hill, debate kicks off at 10:30 a.m., and the legislation has been split up into two separate parts -- one covering the actual voting seats both D.C. and Utah would receive and the other dealing with the minor increase in annual spending the......

Hoyer and Pelosi Need Your Input: Mike Panetta, D.C. Shadow Representative, informed us that voting rights activists are pushing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) to bring the voting rights legislation that was derailed last week back to the floor of the House this week. They're afraid that if it gets pushed off until next week, it may well get lost in the usual congressional shuffle. Panetta has......

So you're all probably wondering what the heck is up with the debate on the voting rights legislation. Well, it seems that the Republicans may have played a brilliant game of politics. Towards the end of the debate, which was slated to end a little after 2 p.m., Republicans attempted to introduce an amendment to the legislation which would nullify the District's gun laws. This isn't anything new -- they've tried many times before --......

OK, we're going to try live blogging debate on the House floor as much as we can. Acting speaker right now is Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher (D- CA). Floor manager Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Judiciary Chairman, has just finished introducing the legislation and expressing his belief that the District Clause allows the Congress to make any laws for D.C. it sees fit. 12:27 p.m.: Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) is currently making the case on behalf......

It was just two weeks ago that hundreds of District residents gathered to lobby Congress into passing legislation that would grant the District a voting seat in the House. There seemed to be some momentum; all that was missing was for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to schedule a vote. But as is often the case with the District's uphill quest for enfranchisement, the legislation has his a snag. Roll Call, via FreeRide, is......

Though the District continued its slow crawl back to normalcy after Tuesday night's ice storm, hundreds of District residents and supporters fanned out in Congress to lobby for legislation that would grant the city a voting seat in the House of Representatives. Part of a lobby day sponsored by D.C. Vote, the almost 400 residents divided up into 50 teams and aimed to visit every member of the House, bringing with them a simple message......

Around the time of last year's State of the Union address, we asked whether then-Mayor Anthony Williams should have foregone attending the annual event as a guest of First Lady Laura Bush, to make clear his continuing disappointment with the District's lack of voting rights. Some commenters thought the idea preposterous, with one going as far as to opine: Of course the mayor should attend. What the f*ck is boycotting it going to accomplish? Do......

>> We don't know about you, but our mom used to tell us if we can't take care of our own toys, we didn't deserve them anyway. With the District's smoking ban now in force throughout the city's bars and restaurants, pretty much the only option for smokers set on enjoying a quick cigarette without heading outside was getting elected to Congress. Today, that changed. The Hill reports that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi officially banned smoking in the Speaker's Lobby, an ornate room beside the House chamber that for decades has been the refuge of smokers in Congress. The Post......

Hoyas Bully the Irish Georgetown came into Saturday’s contest with Notre Dame after a successful, if underwhelming non-conference season. After starting the year with high hopes and a top ten ranking, three early losses pushed them off the national radar and out of the rankings. ND, however, was so hot they were smokin’, and riding a 12-game winning streak to a #17 ranking. But after a 66-48 thrashing of the Irish at the Verizon Center,......

The debate over voting rights for the District's delegate in Congress is bubbling up at the very beginning of the 110th Congress. Under the newly minted Democratic-controlled Congress, it seems we here in Washington are closer than ever to obtaining full-fledged representation in the House of Representatives. This morning at the ceremonial swearing-in of the Congressional Black Caucus, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi specifically mentioned D.C. voting rights in her remarks, prompting a standing......

It seemed like it would be our year. After lobbying throughout most of 2006, voting rights activists and their allies in Congress had all but convinced House Republicans to go along with a plan to grant the District one voting seat in the House of Representatives. The relevant congressional committees had signed off on the legislation; Utah, which would similarly gain a seat in a partisan tit-for-tat exchange, formally endorsed the idea; President Bush indicated......
