Last month, we launched our first collaboration with the Washington Humane Society and highlighted a handful of dogs that needed to find a home. The WHS's goal to "increase adoption, decrease the number of animals in need, and teach responsible pet ownership" is one that we truly believe in, and we're happy to report that two of the dogs we featured in October, Tancho and Nina, found homes!! Nina's new owner saw our photos and knew that she was the right dog for their family. She now lives with a family of five, two young children, two adults and another pit bull who is Nina's new best friend. Sumi, the beautiful and smart Akita mix is still at the shelter waiting to be sprung. Kate was diagnosed with heart worms and has been moved to the Washington Animal Rescue League to recover. She will be up for adoption again once she gets better.

WUSA9 is reporting that a police officer shot and killed a man at approximately 10:30 this morning on the 800 block of Upshur Street NW in Petworth. After authorities responded to a report of a person tampering with a vehicle, the suspect fled the scene. A scuffle ensued and shots were then fired. You can count on plenty of police investigating the area today.

A quick update on last night's quadruple shooting in the Brightwood Park area. Four people were shot, one fatally, in the 900 block of Hamilton Street NW, and now police have released the identity of the deceased: Michael Harris, 24, of the 4000 block of 4th Street NW, was shot and killed at around 6:30 p.m. last night, WJLA reports. At least one of the other three victims is reported to have sustained serious injuries as well. The shooting appears to have erupted due to some kind of argument. "A relative of Harris told ABC 7 News the victims were all friends and were just hanging out when the violence erupted." Police were searching for an older model blue station wagon in the area last night in relation to the shooting.

There's a few things happening in the world of organic grocery stores lately, with some good news for Petworth folks and not-so-good news for Columbia Heights residents. First the good: the Yes! Organic Market at 4100 Georgia Avenue NW officially opens today at 3 p.m. Wednesday at 10 a.m. As for the bad, over the past few weeks some passersby have reported construction work being done in the space that Ellwood Thompson's organic supermarket is renting in the DCUSA complex at 14th and Irving. You'll recall that back in April the Richmond-based grocer announced the opening of their first D.C. store was delayed indefinitely due to the economy. Of the recent visible work inside the space, Ellwood Thompson spokesperson Cyndi Watkins had this to say: "As of right now I have not heard anything new about us moving to D.C. Any construction being done must be work the landlord is doing." UPDATE: Looks like Ward 4 Council member Muriel Bowser's office jumped the gun on announcing the Petworth opening. A spokesperson for Yes! Organic Market now tells us that the store will be opening for the first time at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, with the ceremonial ribbon cutting pushed back to Thursday, August 27. Both Bowser and Mayor Adrian Fenty are expected to be in attendance on August 27.

The Great Tivoli North Debate

We mentioned this briefly over the weekend, but it's worth looking into -- there have been various reports and rumors that portions of Columbia Heights were going to be renamed Tivoli North (or sometimes Tivoli Heights) after the theater located at 14th and Park Road. The name change (or invention) infuriated many, but then it turns out to have been blown out of proportion.

Fire crews have been called to respond to a suspicious package at Allison and 8th Streets NW in Petworth, a relatively unusual spot for such an incident.
