We're not quite sure what's going on here, but color us intrigued. Flickr user elocke apparently took this detail of an art car at last weekend's H Street Festival. You can check out other details of random vignettes, but alas no shot of the entire car. Anyone catch a glimpse of this gaudy spectacle? EXIF.......

Check out this mysterious shot from Flickr user gbmcinephoto. The subject itself is great: where is this person going? What has his day been like? Is it the end of the day and he just wants to escape? Or did he just wake up, no doubt worrying his day is not exactly off to a great start? Great mood, tone, and framing; it's an image that really pops out and makes you think for......

Flickr user murkiv captured what appears to be an intense game of chess at one of the tables located in Dupont Circle. We've highlighted Dupont chess before, uncovering a bit of this fascinating sub-culture. But this shot leaves me wondering; is standing a sanctioned fake out move?......

While the dog days of summer can mean long lulls at local galleries, Flickr user RSchley brings us this lovely reminder that you can still get your art fix at area museums. The American Art Museum is home to Nam June Paik's Electronic Superhighway exhibit, a behemoth video installation with bright neon lights and movie clips meant to convey our connection to both our sprawling countryside and infinite new media. Check out the August......

Flickr user dharmabumx captured this shot of a beautiful blue sky and fluffy white clouds at Nationals Park. Here's wishing the same blue skies and clean air for all of the athletes set to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, which begin today. It doesn't look so good right now, however.......

Flickr user LaTur shot an-otherwise mundane coffee shop scene and made it spectacular by capturing the afternoon light. The composition draws emphasis to the tiled floor. We love the yellow tones and long shadows that stretch across the vast white space of the floor. EXIF.......

Tim Russert's unexpected death touched many of us here in Washington. Flickr user Mr. T in DC captured this reverent shot of Russert's final resting place in Rock Creek Cemetery. The temporary marker and wilted flowers are small and inconsequential in comparison to the media giant's life. EXIF.......

One of the great things about our fair city is its proximity to the open road and some gorgeous scenery, and this photo by SpecialEd98 serves as a reminder. Those of us trapped in cubes might be kinda jealous of the happy dog, whose name is Wally for those of you that are curious, but this picture helps us take our minds off the unseasonably cold weather and keeps our attention on a potentially......

When I first came across this photo by cstein96 in the DCist pool yesterday, the quaint scene and the cinematic quality to it gave me a strange sense of joy. When I found it again today, I realized why: The Red Balloon! The image of this bright red hat blowing away in the wind over the cityscape is a cute little homage to the film so many of us remember watching in our childhood.......

Cupcakes! Tens of thousands of cupcakes! All to celebrate... Maryland Day? Okay, we need a little help from some of the knowledgeable readers out there on this one. This past Saturday, the University of Maryland hosted a big Maryland Day celebration (including 50,000 freaking cupcakes in the shape of the state flag), which Flickr user Sabine01 attended. But The Google, to which we referred when the UMD site had no information other than this......

Ah, parades. They bring out not just the celebratory, but the weird and wacky, the fashion challenged, the politicos grasping at any reason to mourn for olden days and, of course, the strange graffiti on latex glove balloons. But we appreciate it when the toys come out for a little performance down the parade route, like this poor guy attempting to maneuver his enormous-tire bike. Flickr user sintixerr caught the rider trying his best......

Looks like this year's festivities for St. Patrick's Day have gotten under way. Flickr user spiggycat took this photo during yesterday's St. Patrick's Day 8K Run (and also caught Mayor Adrian Fenty on the course). Next weekend the real ruckus will begin; St. Patrick's Day was officially moved to Saturday, March 15 this year by the Irish Bishops so as not to conflict with the earlier-than-usual Holy Week. So remember, if you're not into......

So far all signs point to "awesome" for the Recognize hip-hop exhibit going on over at the National Portrait Gallery. We especially like j6photo's caption here, "does anyone else see the irony of a security guard, guarding graffiti?" EXIF.......

Flickr user spectreman actually took this photo after the Wednesday snow flurries -- we imagine there won't be too much in the DCist pool from this annoying little ice storm going on right now. Although the snow-covered Vespa is kind of pretty, sitting there on the wet brick sidewalk (with some nice bokeh from the 50mm lens), it probably wasn't so nice for the owner who needed to ride it somewhere. EXIF.......

Flickr user F1.4 was one of the unfortunate people stuck in the insane traffic last night so long that he didn't make it to the polls in time to cast his vote. Getting Photo of the Day probably isn't a consolation prize for the loss of the democratic right to choose your elected officials, but it is a pretty sweet photo. No doubt the long 2.5 second exposure makes these cars look like they're......

This photo is so awesome, from the panoramic view, to the pink tint, to the cloned expressions on everyone's faces. The only thing that would make this perfect is if they were all screaming and holding their hands out at the invisible 3D monster reaching out to get them. Flickr user parikha49 took this at a screening of U2 3D at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum last weekend.......

There's nothing I love better than surfing through the DCist Flickr pool for PotD and suddenly coming across a photo that makes me blurt, "Wow." Flickr user gattoraffa found this circle of trees at Georgetown University, and as lovely as I'm sure they are in the spring or fall, covered in green or red leaves, the fantastic barebones natural architecture makes for a striking design, especially in black and white.......

Though there are a lot of great photos in the pool today, this image taken at Haines Point of The Awakening by Brandon Jones seemed like the perfect shot to start off the new year. EXIF. Did you resolve to enter the DCist Exposed Photography Show this year? You only have 11 more days to submit your application and put your entries in the pool. And since it is the beginning of a new......

In all my time doing Photo of the Day, I don't think I've ever seen a picture of the outside of the U.S. Botanic Gardens, like this one by mosley.brian. Usually a lovely reflective night shot like this is the Kennedy Center, but we've been happy to see quite a few of our photographers head towards the gardens once the weather turns cold. It's open all year long and a fantastic way to get......

I love holiday photos like this, warm with just a hint of sparkle, rather than the garish no-holds-barred plastic Santa light display preferred by those with the festive spirit in overdrive. DC Jeff took this postcard perfect image somewhere on the Georgetown campus. Happy holidays indeed. Have you submitted your application for DCist Exposed 2008 yet? No time like the present! The 2007 winners are all over the place: mark your calendars for 6......
