FRIDAY:

>> A singer-songwriter showcase featuring Martin Royle of Washington Social Club, Mick Coogan of The Dance Party and Stephen Kilroy of Middle Distance Runner is being billed by MDR as "Steve, Martin tonight at the Black Cat!" Which is technically true, though we're guessing the show will be a little more earnest guitar playing and a little less Wild and Crazy Guy. Black Cat's back stage. $8, 9 p.m. >> Redskins CB Carlos Rogers...

MONDAY >> The City Veins are a strong local outfit that's been making their debut around town over the course of the past few months. They just formed in March and are already more mature and ready to bring the rock than a lot of bands with a lot more stage time. And hey, they have a blog! See what you're missing tonight at Solly's Tavern on U Street. 10 p.m. >> Do you...

>> "A public meeting on taxicab meters scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled, apparently because too many people were interested in attending and the D.C. Taxicab Commission couldn't guarantee them parking." [Examiner] >> A former escort linked to embattled Sen. David Vitter is set to testify that alleged D.C. Madam Deborah Jeane Palfrey's escort service provided illegal prostitution. [WTOP] >> Libertarian billionaire Robert Levy would like to give all D.C. residents a handgun. Or...

Monday >>Provided these thunderstorms pass us by in time, the place to be tonight is Fort Reno. First off, it's free, and we know everyone's wallets are light from all that gas you're having to put in the car just to make a run to the beach. Second, recent Three Stars alums Garland of Hours are taking the stage, along with The Aerialist, and the excellently named Lady in the Radiator. 7:15 p.m., $0....

FRIDAY: >> DCist favorites The French Kicks are at the Rock and Roll Hotel tonight with The Childballads (the Bon Savants cancelled). $13, 9:30 p.m. >> Exotic Fever Records is keeping the spirit of the D.C. underground scene alive almost singlehandedly, and this weekend they'll celebrate their seven year anniversary with an ecclectic festival to showcase their artists. Tonight it's Mass Movement of the Moth, New Idea Society, Den of Thieves, Kathy Cashel, Worn In...

FRIDAY: >> Nothing wrong with another strong all-local lineup: Washington Social Club, These United States and Let's French will be on Black Cat's mainstage. DCist has interviewed two of these bands before, and we're set to get up close and personal with the third. So check 'em out. 9:30 p.m., $10. >> We're definitely impressed with the speed at which DC Rollergirls have gotten their act together since hosting a series of recruitment happy hour/arm...

As a rather fervent concert goer, I've been watching my October Outlook calendar with alternating excitement and dread as my concert calendar gets more and more crowded. This all came to a head yesterday as I started putting in the DAMfest schedule and noticed a whole bunch of scheduling conflicts in the making. Area indie rock fans are going to have some tough choices to make the last full week of October. Thursday, Oct....

On Friday night, Dex and J.R. of Death by Sexy were joined on stage by Tony Acampora of Greenland, as DxS celebrated the release of their new EP, Big Hit. Without any prior live exposure to Death by Sexy, we can say that Acampora's quality guitar playing added to the energy and mystique of the Death by Sexy's show. While neither a Josh Homme side project or the recently broken up Death From Above 1979, Death by Sexy developed their own cock-rock glamfest formula as ostentatious and gaudy as the pink and white boas they sport from time to time.

All week you've been saying "Is it Friday yet?". Good news: it's Friday! Expect the sweltering heat to take a bit of a hiatus, with our temperatures today slated to drop into the low 90s, with isolated thunderstorms into the evening. How does the weekend look? Saturday and Sunday will vacillate between partly sunny and partly cloudy, according to Weather.com, with highs in the low 90s and high 80s. Sounds lovely, compared to the feels-like-110-degrees...

Monday >> From the city that brought you Starbucks coffee, Pretty Girls Make Graves will wake you up this Monday night at the Black Cat with their own caffeinated brand of post-punk rock off of their new album Elan Vital with Giant Drag and The Joggers. $13, mainstage, 8:30 p.m. >> There’s no better place to get out of the rain and mellow out than at Iota with the acoustic sounds of Virginia’s young singer/songwriter...

Tomorrow night the curtain will rise on our second Unbuckled, a fantastic night of music at DC9 featuring The Hard Tomorrows, Olivia Mancini and the Housemates, and DJ Leafblower. We'll be giving away tons of stuff, tossing back the beer, and generally enjoying some of the best bands that Washington has to offer. Today and tomorrow, we'll be taking a quick look at the acts that will take the stage at our show, and we begin with the very talented Olivia Mancini, who was kind enough to answer our questions about her latest project, the band, and the music we look forward to hearing on Thursday.

Today brings the final installment of the November Three Stars, a sit down interview with the Routineers, Three Stars' first encounter with D.C.'s legendary label, Dischord. Tuesday we reviewed The Caribbean's new album, Plastic Explosives. Yesterday we interviewed DJ Will Eastman. Three Stars will return in December.

FRIDAY: >> You just can't say the D.C. music scene doesn't care. Check out the 2-night Katrina's Piano Fund benefit concert at Black Cat, featuring a packed line-up of local acts. Saturday is Wooly Mammoth, The Whips, Owls and Crows, Edie Sedgwick, Rose, andDJ lil' e. $12 for one show, or maximize your band-to-dollar ratio and pay just...

Catherine Andrews contributed to these picks FRIDAY: >> It's your duty as a local music loving citizen: you must make it out to the Black Cat tonight to catch the line up of Washington Social Club (read our interview here), Monopoli, and Cartel. Their live shows range from frenetic to slowburning to melodious, and they're all a treat. DCist will be there with stacks of t-shirts to sell and info about the site. 9:30,...

DCist sat down (virtually, that is) with Washington Social Club drummer Randy Scope to talk about their band, D.C., and how to get a crowd to dance. Don't forget (as if we would let you) - they've got a show Friday at the Black Cat with Monopoli and Cartel. It's obvious that you guys are popular locally - how's the transition towards getting your name and music out there nationally going? What are you doing...

From DCist contributor Ryan Avent MONDAY: >> Monday is an excellent time to visit Fort Reno as Garland of Hours (featuring noted DC cellist Amy Domingues and a Fugazi rhythm section) take the stage. They’re joined by DCist favorite The Aquarium and by local songwriter-slash-St. Ex bartender Paul Michel. The show is free as always and begins about 7:15. Click here to read last week’s interview with Paul Michel. >> If tranquil melodies are your...

Here's a show we couldn't be more excited to be writing about. This coming Friday (August 5th) at the Black Cat, the lineup consists of three of our favorite local groups: Cartel (who thoroughly impressed the crowds at the Unbuckled concert last June), Monopoli, and Washington Social Club. They're joining forces to bring you a night of excellent local rock. For only $9, you can see some of the best indie rock that the city has to offer. Check out a Cartel mp3 here, a Monopoli one here, and a WSC one here.

MONDAY: >> Didn't grab tickets to the now-sold-out Dinosaur Jr. reunion show at the 9:30 Club? May we suggest craigslist or French Toast, The Chance, and Caution Curves at Fort Reno for free? The Fort Reno show starts at 7:15 p.m.; you can check out some French Toast songs here. >> The DC Hip Hop Theater Festival, a project of the DC Commission on the Arts, features national and international artists and goes on all...

Well, this weekend looks like it’s going to be absolutely gorgeous, so we’re hard pressed to recommend doing anything besides rolling around in the grass outside. With a beer. Or seven. That’s our plan, at least. But if you’d like more options, our suggestions follow. And don’t forget to plan ahead: DCist’s Unbuckled concert, featuring Cartel and Bicycle Thieves, is a little less than two weeks away! FRIDAY: >> The third annual AFI and Discovery...

MONDAY: >> In one of the strongest bills of the summer, the Pixies and Bloc Party (at left) take the stage at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Gates are open at 5:30 p.m. >> Local rockers Greenland and City-State hit DC9 with Richmond band Conshafter for $6. TUESDAY: >> Arlington punk quartet Four Letter Lies plays with local glam rockers Death By Sexy at the Black Cat. 9 p.m., $5. THURSDAY: >> Bloc Party, post sharing the...

For 38 summers, the Northwest Youth Alliance has been rocking D.C. residents with free all-ages outdoor shows at the District's highest point, Fort Reno Park. Performers have ranged from local high school bands to up-and-coming local acts to nationally known bands like Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, who played last year. And as usual, DCist has been waiting anxiously for the release of the Fort Reno's 2005 schedule so we could plan our summer. Would...

FRIDAY: >> If your faux pas have lately been spiraling out of control, head over tout suite to Politics & Prose. You can buy everything from well-engineered teddy bears to wood art. Check...

As you might expect their blog has attracted some dissenters, one posting "Indeed, when people feel compelled to create a blog such as this, one can only imagine that it is the result of some significant penile envy and general character flaws." Not everyone was upset - a certain Steve Zarick from the Washington Wizards posted a comment offering the club members free tickets to an April game complete with "in-game recognition."

Spring has finally sprung -- or so it would seem. With weather looking to be above 50 degrees for the rest of the weekend, make sure to get out in the city and take advantage of what it has to offer. Capital Weather reminds us that some area ski destinations, like Whitetail and Liberty, are offering online coupons for 2-for-1 lift tickets if you want to squeeze in one more run.

(Review and interview by DCist special contributor Peter Denton) Image from carteldc.com Too many trips to 9:30 Club and Black Cat to catch the latest indie sensation really start to wear us down. It’s always refreshing to head to a smaller venue and see some hard-working local bands with their egos firmly in check. So this past Saturday we ventured into the cookie-cutter community of Clarendon to find much-buzzed-about locals Cartel headlining at Iota. With...

>> Everybody knows that the only true thing going on tonight is the DCist happy hour! From 5-8 p.m., DCist editors and contributors will be at Biddy Mulligans on Dupont Circle, starting our weekend off with a Guinness or four. Definitely drop on by with some friends for a chat, a rant, or to confirm that we are indeed real, live people as opposed to automated Gothamist bots.

Before we point you to our concert picks for this week, make sure you go check out the Six Points Festival lineup. The festival features performances from dozens of area bands at venues throughout Arlington and D.C. MONDAY: >> Sticky-sweet Japanese punksters Shonen Knife play the Black Cat tonight. $12. TUESDAY: >> If you feel like a blast from the past (or, rather, the mid-90s), female rocker Lisa Loeb (at right), she of the black-framed...
